Members of the League of Women Voters of Santa Fe County:
Thank you for your hard work in this election cycle. We helped register thousands of Santa Fe County residents to vote, provided essential information to help people cast informed ballots, worked at the polls during early voting and on Election Day, and so much more.
More important than any single candidate or party, together we helped ensure a free and fair election here in Santa Fe County – as did our LWV colleagues and other election workers across the country.
No violence. No threats. No intimidation. Votes counted swiftly and accurately with losers conceding to winners, allowing the lawful transfer of power. This election — in Santa Fe County and across the nation — proved once again that the keystone of our democracy is still intact: The voters decide who leads us.
However, less than half the U.S. population voted in this election. And given the disturbing rhetoric heard during the campaign, we are deeply concerned about the challenges we may face, particularly regarding issues that disproportionately affect women. This means we must be more vigilant and work harder than ever to protect our rights. Our work locally in the city, county and state takes on increasing importance to ensure transparency, fairness, equity and justice.
I hope you will join us in getting back to the serious work of supporting women and improving our democracy. The League of Women Voters is playing a long game.
